Size a dining room chandelier to the table and not to the room. Keep it about 60cm narrower than the table top and set the lowest point 75 to 85cm above it, so faces stay visible across the table. A round table takes a round piece, and a long one suits a linear chandelier or a run of two.
Glare matters more here than anywhere else, because the fitting sits close to eye level for the length of a meal. Crystal and satin glass help. A dimmer is essential, and warm colour temperature, 2700K, is usual.
