A table lamp in glass stays in view whether it is on or off, so judge it unlit as well. Coloured glass sits as an object in the room by day. Opal and satin glass are quieter and give a more useful light when they are on.
For a side table, a lamp's base should be about level with the arm of the sofa or chair, with the light itself near eye level when seated. On a console, height can be greater, and the lamp is usually doubled. A lamp of 56cm suits a bedside table; 30 to 40cm suits a shelf.
