At a ceiling height of 2.4m, a fitting can be about 30cm deep before it drops into the 2.1m clearance people need beneath it. That rules out most hanging chandeliers, and it is why the pieces here are made flush or semi-flush. Over a dining table, where no one walks, you can go deeper.
A low ceiling also brings the light closer to the eye. Choose a piece whose lamps are hidden by crystal or glass, and dim it. Width can carry the presence that height can't: a piece of 90cm or more at 25cm deep can hold a room in the way a hanging chandelier does.
