Buying bedside wall lights in the UK

Aurora by Virginia Cei is 26cm wide and 21cm tall, and projects 31cm, with the globe fixed about 1.2 to 1.3m from the floor. Regolo 8146/APP is a vertical bar of 80cm with a plate of marble, the size for a bedside wall. Caterina is 34cm tall and lights up and down at once.

Trilliane is the small crystal option, and Sterling gives the same in the eighteenth-century pattern, at £525. Crek gathers panels of translucent glass around a brushed brass frame, quiet enough for a bedside. Tobia sets a single arm of blown glass on the wall. For hanging lights instead, see bedside pendant lights.

A bedside wall light has to do two jobs: give enough light to read by and stay out of the eyes of the person next to you. Fix it so the source sits about 60cm above the top of the mattress, usually 1.2 to 1.3m from the floor, then check the projection. Anything that projects more than about 30cm can catch a shoulder when you sit up.

A fitting with a glass or crystal diffuser gives a softer light over the pillow than an open lamp. Wiring is the part to settle early, since a chased-in cable and a switch reachable from the bed cost much less before the walls are finished.
