Iceberg

Iceberg is made from more than 4,000 clear acrylic tubes, 4,086 by Terzani's count, hung in tiers around a white frame so that the whole piece reads as a mass of ice. Dodo Arslan took the idea from ice crystals, and from the way light behaves when it passes through water. Each tube catches and carries the light along its length, so the chandelier glitters from every angle and seems to drip light at its lower edge.

Because the tubes are assembled by hand, Terzani treats every Iceberg as a one-off sculpture. Up close you see the individual rods and their different lengths; from across a room it becomes a single shimmering form, brilliant when lit and still sculptural when switched off. Arslan has designed several of Terzani's pieces, including the Oscar table lamp and the Stanley floor lamp, and Iceberg shows his interest in what a material does to light.

In the room. At 74cm across and 115cm deep, Iceberg has real presence, and it is at its best where it can be seen from below and from the side. Hang it in a stairwell or the void of a double-height hall, above a round dining table in a tall room, or in a hotel lobby or private reception where it gives the space a natural centrepiece. The overall height adjusts on site from 150 to 220cm. At the shortest setting it needs a ceiling of about 3.6 metres to leave 210cm clear to walk beneath; over a dining table, with its lower edge about 75cm above the top, a ceiling of 3 metres is enough. Six E14 lamps and one E27 light the tubes from within, and the piece dims on any system, so it can go from bright and crystalline to a low, glacial glow.
