Folie Chandelier

Folie starts from a flat bar of white lacquered metal, with eleven white glass arms growing out of it, each ending in a pleated shade and each pointing somewhere different. Between the arms run glass tentacles that coil, kink and cross one another, some rising above the shades and some trailing below the bar. Ruffled glass collars ring every arm. The maker's word is surreal, and it describes the tentacles as if they were alive.

White glass on a white frame means the shape is read through shadow and outline, and the grey shades are the only colour in the piece. They are pleated pongé, handmade in Italy, listed in the catalogue as Cotton Grey, with the colour confirmed at specification. Clear glass is the other option. Because the shades tilt in every direction, the E14 lamps send light up, down and sideways at once, so expect an uneven pattern on the ceiling and not a steady pool on the table.

It hangs from two separate ceiling bars, so plan two fixing points for its 25kg. The footprint of 140 by 90cm suits a table of about 200 to 240cm. The drop runs from 90 to 140cm, and in a 2.4m room the shortest setting places it 75cm above the table top. Walking beneath with 2.1m clear needs a ceiling of 3m. Against dark paint the white stands out sharply, as in the maker's black-ground photograph. In a pale room it becomes quieter, and a plain ceiling will serve it better than heavy mouldings.
