Epoque

Epoque began as a study of chiaroscuro, the Renaissance painter's art of modelling volume with light and shade, and Stefano Papi and Saviz Yaghmai turned it into something you can stand beneath. A frame of flexible brass is shaped into two sweeping bands, a long central section and an outer ring of wide arcs, and dressed in fine metal chain that falls in folds like heavy silk. Twenty small LED modules sit within it, so light seems to come from the chain itself.

The result has the pose of a sculpture. The two bands curve past each other as if caught turning, and as you walk round it the piece changes shape, bright where the chain is lit and shadowed where it folds away. Terzani describes it as a modern expression of Renaissance technique, and it is made by a house born in Florence.

In the room. The chandelier is 136cm across and about 190cm overall, a commanding piece for a dining room with real ceiling height, a double-height reception room or a hotel lobby, where its sweep can be read from a distance. The vertical chandelier twists the same idea into a 200cm spiral only 35cm across: hang it in a stairwell, a narrow void or the corner of a tall room, or set several in a row along a gallery or reception desk. It adjusts on site from 215 to 250cm overall. The horizontal chandelier is supplied at a fixed overall height of about 190cm, so it needs a ceiling of around 4 metres to leave 210cm clear beneath, or around 3.4 metres over a dining table with its lower edge 75cm above the top; custom heights for lower rooms are made to order.

Gold plate gives the warmest light. Brushed bronze is softer and deeper, black nickel dramatic and graphic, and nickel cool and silvery. Both forms come with LED at 3000K or an extra-warm 2700K.
