Buying brass and bronze chandeliers in the UK

Dragon by Dodo Arslan is brass cast at a historic foundry in Tuscany, in a form that holds a burst of molten metal. Atlantis by Barlas Baylar drapes hundreds of lengths of fine brass chain over polished bands, and Volver drops ribbons of chain from a band of light.

Na-ar by Studio Scatter D is made of slim cylinders of fluted brass, and Lustralis alternates painted pure brass stems with borosilicate glass. Icicles offers polished brass, matt brass and bronze among its standard finishes. Every brass and bronze piece is in Brass and Bronze.

The chandeliers here are built in brass or finished in bronze as a main part of the design, which is different from a gold-coloured coating on a steel frame. Ask two things of any brass piece: is the structure solid or plated, and will the finish be lacquered or left to age? Unlacquered brass changes colour with handling, and hand-patinated brass explains why two identical fittings can look nothing alike.

Bronze finishes sit darker and softer than brass and tend to suit oak, stone and darker paint. Polished brass suits plain white plaster, where its reflections show.
