Carmen 729/70 Chandelier

Carmen 729/70 is a round chandelier made almost entirely of glass. A slim chrome frame carries two deep bands of Murano glass elements, teak above and transparent below, and an LED source running round the perimeter lights them from within, so the glass itself becomes the light. Italamp calls Carmen a jewel lamp and describes it as a contemporary twist on the classic chandelier: the drum silhouette is familiar, but there are no arms, no candles and almost no visible structure.

The collection is by Italamp Studio, and the glass is the whole idea. Each element is a short piece of Murano glass that Italamp calls a quadrihedron, hung close to its neighbours so that together they filter the light and break it into fine vertical lines. The teak band gives the upper half a warm, smoky colour; the transparent band beneath keeps the lower edge bright.

At 72cm across, the 729/70 is the Carmen for a round or square dining table of about 110 to 140cm, an entrance hall or a stair landing. Its 78W module gives 8,100 lumens, enough to light a dining room on its own, so DALI, 1-10V or Casambi dimming is worth specifying if the room will also be used for quieter evenings. The drop adjusts from 10 to 100cm, giving an overall height of 44 to 134cm below the ceiling: with the lower edge about 75cm above the table top, that suits ceilings up to about 2.85m. At 34kg it needs a secure fixing.

For a longer table, the same glass comes in 90cm and 110cm rounds and the 120cm linear 719/120. The 90cm Carmen hangs over the dining table of a private residence in Chatsworth, Singapore, by Pure Interiors.
