The Dark Room

What to hang in a room painted dark: pale glass, polished metal and pieces that stand out.

A dark wall takes in the light that a pale one would return, so a dark room needs more sources at lower levels, and pieces that hold their own against the ground. Pale glass and polished metal do best. Against dark paint the white of Folie stands out sharply, and the maker's panelled black room shows far more of the detail on Vanity than a pale one would.

On Cage by Leo De Carlo, a dark wall turns the rods a smoky mauve and the clear butterflies stand out. The doves of Light of Love look best at a little above eye level against a dark ground. Doodle throws softer shadows on dark paint, and Italamp's olive Caterina suits dark painted walls and timber panelling.

Choose warm lamps and put everything on a dimmer. Darker finishes tend to disappear here, so keep the metal bright.
