Carmen 729/90 Chandelier

Carmen 729/90 is a 90cm ring of glass. Rows of Murano glass quadrihedrons, in teak and transparent glass, hang close together from a slim chrome frame, and an LED source set around the perimeter sends its light down through every piece, so the whole band glows rather than any single point.

Italamp Studio, the company's in-house design team, set out to give the classic chandelier a contemporary twist. Italamp calls Carmen a jewel lamp: the structure is kept to a minimal frame so the glass does the work, and the light filtering through the rows has, in the maker's words, the effect of a waterfall. In this version the warm teak rows sit between clear ones, so the ring reads as bands of amber and crystal, lit or unlit.

In the room, the 729/90 is sized for a round or square dining table of 150cm or more, a stair hall, or a principal bedroom with ceiling height to spare. It is 34cm deep and hangs on a 100cm electrical cable, so the studio will confirm the finished height against your ceiling and table before it is made. The integrated 100W module gives 9,800 lumens at a colour rendering over 90, enough to serve as the main light in a dining room rather than decoration over a lit one. Carmen comes in three round sizes: for a smaller room the 729/70 keeps the same profile at 72cm, and for a double-height space the 729/110 reaches 110cm and 13,500 lumens.

Made in Italy by Italamp, which has designed and made lighting since 1975 from its base at Cadoneghe, near Padua.
