Lob Chandelier

Leo De Carlo designed Lob for Multiforme as a spider in glass, and spider is the maker's own word for it. A central body hangs from a single rod, and jointed limbs reach out from a shallow bowl, each section shaped freehand from blown glass and linked to the next by a small metal ball joint. The tips curve like claws. Seen from the side the piece is mostly air, so even at 2.5m wide it does not fill a room.

The glass comes in two colours, and they light differently. Matt Black is opaque, so the limbs stay dark and the G4 lamps show only as points at their tips. White lets the lamp through, so each claw glows along its length while the limbs behind it stay solid. The joints come in black nickel, as on the black fitting here, or in patina brass, the warm metal seen against the white.

Two sizes are made, each at a fixed height with no adjustable drop. The 12-light is Ø180cm and 130cm tall. To walk beneath it, allow a ceiling of 3.4m: 2.1m of clearance plus the fitting. Over a dining table of about 240 to 280cm it needs 2.8m: 75cm of table, 75cm of air and 130cm of chandelier. The 20-light is Ø250cm and 170cm tall, and belongs in a double-height hall or a hotel lounge with at least 3.8m to the ceiling. Its limbs reach 1.25m from the centre, so measure the distance to walls and stair rails. At 30kg and 50kg, check the fixing point before ordering.
