Aurora 796/LT Table Lamp

Aurora is a table lamp built from simple geometric parts. An ancient white column stands on a round coloured base; on top of it sits a sphere of brushed light gold, and above that a coloured metal dish, tilted at an angle, cups a globe of white glass. The dish shades the bulb on one side and throws the light forward and down, so the lamp has a clear front and back.

Italamp describes Aurora as an eclectic collection with a retro allure: its name refers to the light that fills the sky just before sunrise, and its colours recall the painted machinery of early Italian industry. It was designed by Virginia Cei, born in Pisa in 1992, whose first product for Italamp in 2021 was selected the following year for 'Ten Women Designers', the travelling exhibition organised by the Fondazione Pio Manzù.

At 74cm tall and 35cm wide, this is a substantial lamp, made for a console, a sideboard or a large side table beside a sofa rather than a small bedside. Turn the dish towards the room and the light falls across the surface in front of it; turn it towards a wall and it washes the wall instead. A single 14W E27 LED bulb gives a warm, even light through the white glass, and TRIAC dimming is included, so it works with a standard phase-cut dimmer. Casambi wireless control is available on request. At 11kg it is stable on any surface.

The five colours follow the Italian industrial palette: ancient white, yellow sunrise, baby blue, baby pink and cappuccino, each with the same ancient white column and brushed light gold sphere. The family runs to a floor lamp, pendants and wall lights, so a colour can be carried through a whole room. In a private residence in Padua by Studio Marco Piva, Italamp used the Aurora floor lamp in ancient white with a cappuccino shade in the entrance and the principal bedroom.

Made in Italy by Italamp, which has made lighting since 1975 and is based at Cadoneghe, near Padua.
