Clip 4050/AP45 Wall Light

The AP45 is the smaller Clip wall light: a single sheet of thermoformed glass, 46cm wide, held between two slender metal rods as if clipped to the wall. The sheet has a soft, irregular pebble outline and a rippled surface, and the rods run straight past its top and bottom edges, slightly offset, so the hard line of the metal plays against the free shape of the glass.

Clip is by Pio and Tito Toso, brothers born in Venice who trained as architects at IUAV and have run their own studio since 1996; their lighting has been made by Artemide, Foscarini, Venini and Vistosi, and MoMA in New York has selected some of their projects. Italamp describes Clip as a meeting of glass and metal that gives a soft, enveloping glow. Lit, the glass glows in its colour, amethyst, dark amber or grey, and the wall above and below the rods catches a wash of light.

In the room, the AP45 is 64cm tall and only 9cm deep. In pairs it flanks a bed, a mirror or a fireplace; in a run it marks a corridor without narrowing it. Mount it with the centre of the glass at about eye level, or a little lower beside a bed. On a tall wall, Italamp pairs it with the larger AP60 above, two sizes of the same glass. The integrated 10W module gives 700 lumens at a colour rendering over 90, ambient light rather than reading light. Shiny bronze with amethyst is the strongest colour; shiny champagne with dark amber is warmer, and with grey the quietest.

Made in Italy by Italamp, which has designed and made lighting since 1975 from its base at Cadoneghe, near Padua.
