Parnassus Wall Light

The Parnassus wall light is a composition of glass discs overlapping on a lacquered white plate. Some are clear with a black or white rim, some are ribbed, one is solid black, and two small domes are striped in a tight black and white spiral. Small white knobs hold each disc in place. Multiforme says the shapes and decorations are inspired by fantastic and imaginary worlds, and the design is deliberately eccentric.

There is one glass, listed as shades of grey, and the restriction is the point of it. With colour removed, the eye goes to the pattern: spirals, concentric rings and radial ribs. Four G9 lamps sit behind the discs, so the clear glass lights up and the wall behind takes the glow, while the solid disc and the striped domes stay graphic.

It measures 30cm wide and 36cm high and projects only 8cm, so it can go in a narrow corridor or beside a door, where a deeper wall light would catch a shoulder. At 8kg it is heavy for its size, so plan a solid fixing. Use it where it can be read at eye level: one alone on a plain wall, or a pair either side of a bed or console. A black and white scheme suits it, and so does a warm plaster wall, which is how the maker photographs it.
