Murano Bulb Wall Light

A curved brushed gold bracket holds one of Marcantonio's glass bulbs clear of the wall, hanging free at the end of the arm. Each bulb is blown glass, worked in one of two techniques the maker names, balloton or rigamenà, which give the body its fine spiral. Around that body go hand-applied collars and frills in coloured glass, finished at the base with a flower, a flame or small glass berries. Twelve numbered designs are available, and the swatches above show each one.

The fitting is 35cm high and 15cm across, and weighs 1kg. Because the bulb is exposed and close to eye level, the handwork can be read from a metre away: the spiral in the body, the pulled edge of each frill, and the small flower at the base.

Use a pair beside a bed or a mirror, or a run along a corridor with a different design on each bracket. It takes an E27 lamp. A warm, low-output lamp shows the colours best, because a bright lamp will outshine the glass.

Multiforme is a manufactory of art glass lighting based at Trebaseleghe, in the Veneto.
