Doodle Pendant and Wall Light

Doodle looks drawn rather than made: a single strip of plated brass that loops, crosses and doubles back on itself, like a pen left to wander across a page. The Florentine architect Simone Micheli designed it for Terzani as a picture of how we live now, in paths that tangle and intertwine rather than run in straight lines, and every piece is shaped by hand by Terzani's artisans to its own random route, so no two are the same.

Tiny G4 LED bulbs sit inside the tangle and can be placed anywhere along the line, so the light gathers where you choose. Lit, the open metal throws a second drawing across the walls and ceiling, a web of soft shadow lines that turns a plain room into part of the piece.

Nickel, black nickel, gold or copper plate. The copper is left to age naturally, so it deepens and changes over the years.

In the room

A single Doodle pendant, Ø30cm, is a small sculpture on a cord. It is at its best in groups: three at staggered heights over a console, a side table or a bedside, or a loose cluster in a stairwell, where each tangle throws its own shadow drawing and the drawings overlap. Mixing gold and copper in one group is a lovely way to warm a dark room.

The wall light, about Ø33cm, sits close to the wall so the shadows spread wide around it. Use a pair either side of a bed or a mirror, or scatter five or more across a wall as a constellation, as Terzani photographs it, to turn a corridor or a landing into an installation. Each carries one 2W bulb, so this is mood light, glowing and decorative, rather than reading light.
