Cage Pendant

Leo De Carlo's Cage is a birdcage of curved, twisted glass rods holding butterflies that are shaped by hand by the maker's glassmakers. Each butterfly sits on a fine wire in the middle of the cage, and with the LEDs on, the rods carry the light down their length. Two 30W LEDs sit in the black nickel caps at the top and bottom, which is why the light seems to travel through the glass rather than come from a lamp.

The rods come in five colours: Pagliesco, a pale straw, Ametista, Olive, Cornflower and Sapphire. The butterflies are shown in clear glass with coloured edges. Against a dark wall or planting, as the maker photographs it, the colours are at their strongest. Pagliesco and Olive stay warm. Cornflower and Sapphire are cold and bright.

It is a sculpture as much as a light, so hang it where it can be walked around or seen from the side. The round version is Ø50cm and 65cm high, the tall version Ø50cm and 95cm high, and both take a drop up to 150cm. In a hall, a single tall Cage hung in a stairwell or above a console is enough. In a sitting room it works in a corner over a low table, where it can be seen at eye level from a chair. They weigh 12 to 15kg.
