Caesar Floor Lamp

The Caesar floor lamp is 180cm of glass: a column of stacked knops and ribbed sections, rising from a round metal-rimmed base to a head with five lamps. The head is made like the chandelier, with curled arms ending in small scrolled flowers, scalloped cups and feathered leaves. The column itself is decorated at intervals, so it holds the eye even when the lamps are off.

The maker photographs it in gold glass, described as entirely streaked with gold, and the gold shows most in the ribs and in the bowl of each cup. On a dark wall, this is the version with the most presence. Clear and gold or clear with acacia trim let more of the room show through the column. Clear, gold and polychrome brings in paste flowers, and frosted gives a quieter, matt outline.

Allow a clear circle of 60cm. The arms sit at about head height, so keep it out of the line people walk along: in a corner, in the angle of a stair, or either side of a double door. The lamps are well above anyone seated, so it lights the room and will not serve as a reading lamp. It weighs 30kg, which makes it stable and means its position should be decided before it arrives.
