Libe 160cm Linear Pendant in Dark Wood

Two long frames in dark wengé wood curve up and down side by side for 160cm, each lined with a row of matt crystal lozenges that diffuse the LED. It is only 16cm deep and 30cm high, so from across the room it reads as a drawn line. Fine transparent cables hold it up and all but vanish.

Gianpaolo Rampolla and Andrea Liguori designed Libe for Masiero's Dimore collection as a light that draws geometry in a room. Masiero describes crystal as a very high quality glass with a high refractive index, and matt lozenges of it soften the source here. The company, founded in 1981 at Casale sul Sile near Treviso, is still a family business and carries out every processing step in its own plant.

In the room

Wengé reads close to black against a pale ceiling, so the curve is as clear unlit as lit. Switched on, the pale strip of crystal stands out hard against the dark timber. Masiero photographs it in a sitting room above a low table, and that works: with 2.1m clear beneath it the top is at 2.4m, and the 150cm cable reaches a ceiling of 3.9m.

Over a dining table, 160cm suits a top of about 220 to 260cm. Set the base about 80cm above the table and the top of the fitting is about 185cm from the floor. At 9,360 lumens it can light the table and much of the room, so plan on dimming from the start. The Libe 160cm Linear Pendant in Light Wood has the same form for a paler scheme.
