Nube 8175/LT Table Lamp

Nube stacks three rounded volumes of salmon pink Murano glass, one above another, on an iron grey base, and runs a fluted column of hand-carved crystal up through the middle to carry the light. Italamp describes it as capturing the shifting balance of rounded forms, like clouds swirling in the air. Switched off, it is a 61cm sculpture of tinted glass; switched on, the crystal column glows through the pink and the curves of each volume show as bands of light.

The lamp combines two techniques that rarely meet in one object: the exterior is Murano glass and the interior is hand-carved crystal, which Italamp describes as two traditions in dialogue. It was designed by Defne Koz and Marco Susani, whose Chicago-based studio has worked for Alessi, Foscarini, Vitra and Swarovski among many others.

At 40cm across and 61cm tall, Nube is a lamp for a surface with space around it: a console in an entrance hall, a long sideboard or a deep side table beside a sofa. On a sideboard of 180cm or more, a pair at either end works well. In a private residence in Padua by Studio Marco Piva, Italamp placed a salmon pink Nube along the entrance, where it reads as an object first and a lamp second. A 17W LED module gives 1,350 lumens at a colour rendering over 90, which is soft accent light rather than reading light, and push dimming is included.

Salmon pink warms a scheme of stone, plaster or pale timber. The same lamp is made in blue avio and in smoke, and Nube also comes as a pendant.

Made in Italy by Italamp, which has made lighting since 1975 and is based at Cadoneghe, near Padua.
