Ikebana Table Lamp

Ikebana is by Romani Saccani Architetti Associati, and the reference is the Japanese art of arranging flowers. Each element is a long stem of blown glass, sleeved over braided metal, that bends at the end into a wide chalice with a wavy, irregular rim. On the table lamp, one stem rises from a scalloped metal base, loops over and turns its chalice to face the room, 60cm high in all.

The base and the sleeve inside the glass are in the same metal, so the choice of frame affects the whole piece. Pagliesco glass with brushed gold is the warm version, and Rose with brushed copper the most colourful. Clear with brushed nickel looks almost technical, and shows the braided metal running inside the glass tube.

The lamp shows in the chalice at about eye level when you are seated, so a soft filament lamp suits it better than a bright one. It weighs 4kg and needs about 25 by 20cm of surface. The maker photographs three together in different finishes, and a group on a long console or sideboard is the strongest way to use them.
