Loop 2050/PL125 Ceiling Light

Loop is a ceiling light in two parts. A wide luminous ring sits against the ceiling, framing a mirror-polished disc, and beneath it a much smaller ring hangs on two fine cables. Italamp describes the two rings, each with a different diameter and set at a different height, as a play of volumes and perspectives, and the mirror above catches the room and the lower ring in its surface, so the piece looks deeper than it is.

Loop was designed by Filippo Mambretti, who was born in Como, studied interior and furniture design at the Politecnico di Milano and has won a Good Design Award among others. The structure is metal, in matte champagne, matte midnight grey or matte white, with opaline methacrylate diffusers inside both rings.

At 122cm across and only 28cm deep, the PL125 gives a room with an ordinary ceiling of 2.4 to 2.7m the presence of a large chandelier with none of the drop. A 75W LED module delivers 9,000 lumens at a colour rendering over 90, enough to be the main light in a large living room, a principal bedroom or an open-plan kitchen and dining space. Dimming is not included; specify DALI or Casambi if the room needs to change mood through the day. It weighs 32kg, so it needs a fixing into a joist.

Champagne is the warmest of the three finishes against timber; midnight grey reads almost black; matte white lets the rings float on a white ceiling. For a smaller room, the 93cm PL95 and 60cm PL60 follow the same design.

Made in Italy by Italamp, which has made lighting since 1975 and is based at Cadoneghe, near Padua.
