Loop 2050/PL95 Ceiling Light

Loop is a ceiling light made of two luminous rings of different diameters, set at different heights and joined by fine diagonal rods. The larger ring, 93cm across, sits against the ceiling around a mirror-polished disc; the smaller hangs below it, off-centre, so the piece changes shape as you walk round the room. The mirror picks up the room and the lower ring and returns them.

Filippo Mambretti, a designer from Como who trained at the Politecnico di Milano, works between artisanal tradition and technology, and Loop shows both: a strict structure in matte metal, and a mirror that makes the light look deeper than it is. The rings carry opaline diffusers, so the 59W module reads as two clean lines of light with no visible source.

In the room, Loop is 50cm deep in total, which is what makes it useful: it brings the presence of a pendant to ceilings of around 2.6m, where a hanging piece of this size would sit too low. Over a living area or a bedroom, keep the small ring clear of the main walkway; Italamp's own photographs also place it in a walk-in dressing room. The output is 7,000 lumens at a colour rendering over 90, enough to be the main light in most rooms. Choose matte white to let the frame disappear into a white ceiling, matte midnight grey to draw the rings as dark lines, or matte champagne to warm them. For larger rooms the 2050/PL125 is 122cm across and only 28cm deep.

Made in Italy by Italamp, which has designed and made lighting since 1975 from its base at Cadoneghe, near Padua.
