Plaza 53cm Chandelier

Five tiers of crystal step out from a small crown to a wide middle band and back in again, ending in a single crystal ball. At 53cm across and 48cm tall this Plaza is nearly as high as it is wide, so it reads as one compact mass and carries further across a room than its diameter suggests.

Schonbek places the family in the Hollywood Regency tradition, and the construction explains why. Each tier is a band of upright rectangular prisms edged with smaller square stones, and the underside of each is a dense, woven floor of crystal, so there is something to see from directly below.

The grade is Radiance, the one Schonbek calls its finest for cut, colour and clarity, with nearly three times the jewel-cut facets of mass-produced crystal. Adolph Schonbek founded the house in Bohemia in 1870. Its frames are now laser cut, then welded and finished by hand, and the crystal is pinned by hand.

In the room

The natural place is over a round table of 100 to 120cm. With the base 80cm above a 75cm table, the top of the body sits at about 203cm, which leaves 37cm of suspension under a 2.4m ceiling. To walk beneath it in a hall or on a landing, allow 210cm clear. The top is then at about 258cm, so 2.7m is the practical minimum ceiling.

Light leaves each tier sideways through the prisms and downward through the woven floor, so a table receives broken light with flecks of colour, and the walls pick up the rest. Fully lamped at 40W, the 22 lamps come to 880W: check the circuit and dimmer, or ask the studio about lower-wattage lamps.

If the room is too low for tiers, Schonbek lists a 53cm single drum only 16.5cm tall (6672E). The Plaza 37cm Pendant and Plaza 70cm Pendant sit either side of this one.
