Stream

Christian Lava builds Stream from metal chain, more than seven kilometres of it by Terzani's own account, falling from an undulating plated frame in tier after tier. From across a room it looks like water pouring over the lip of a fountain and freezing in place. Close to, it is thousands of fine links, each catching the light.

Lava's idea, as in his Etoile for Terzani, is to let the material do the work. LED lamps sit within the tiers and a single GU10 at the heart of the piece, so the light passes through curtains of chain rather than shining from a bulb. The cascading tiers send long, streaking shadows across the ceiling and walls, an effect Terzani calls iridescent light. In gold the whole piece glows warm; in nickel it is cool and silvery; black nickel turns it smoky and graphic.

In the room. The large chandelier, 110cm across and 260cm overall, is a piece for a double-height hall, a stairwell void or a hotel lobby, where it can be seen from below and from the landing. The small chandelier, 80cm across and 235cm overall, suits a dining room or drawing room with a generous ceiling. Both are supplied at a fixed overall height: to leave 210cm clear to walk beneath, the large needs a ceiling of about 4.7 metres and the small about 4.45 metres, and the studio makes shorter overall heights for lower rooms. The linear chandelier spans 140cm and adjusts on site up to 175cm, the natural choice over a dining table of around 2.2 metres or longer, hung with its lower edge about 75cm above the top. For lower ceilings, the ceiling light keeps the full effect within about 70cm, and the mini chandelier, 30cm across, brings Stream into a hallway, a bedroom or a cloakroom. The wall sconce, 54cm tall, flanks a fireplace, a bed or a doorway and ties a scheme together around one of the larger pieces.
