Tobia Chandelier

Tobia is a chandelier reduced to its structure. A glass column, broken by small spheres, runs through the centre. Straight arms leave it and turn up into shallow dishes that carry the lamps, and a single teardrop closes the bottom. The glass is left smooth, without the ribbing, flowers or leaves found elsewhere in Multiforme's classical range, so the whole piece reads as one line.

Because the surface is plain, the colour does the work. Graphite goes almost black in the column and thins to smoke at the rim of each dish, where the glass is at its thinnest. Aubergine turns a deep wine red with the lamps on. Opaque Grey is encased glass, one layer over another, and holds a soft, flat tone with no transparency at all. Rosso Murano, a deep red on the maker's chart, is the one to choose if the chandelier is meant to be the first thing seen in the room.

Over a table, the 6-light at Ø85cm suits a round table of about 120 to 150cm or a rectangular table for six. In a room with a 2.4m ceiling, hanging about 75cm above the table, it needs roughly 90cm of drop, within its range of 80 to 130cm. The 8-light at Ø100cm and the 12-light at Ø120cm want a longer table or a higher ceiling. The 5-light at Ø70cm is the size for a bedroom or a small dining room. The matching Tobia wall lights carry the same dish and arm, so a dining room can be lit in one colour throughout.

Multiforme is a manufactory of art glass lighting based at Trebaseleghe, in the Veneto.
