Leo De Carlo designed Lollipop for Multiforme as a giant sweet on a stick: a 200cm column of illuminated art glass discs stacked on a slim black stem. The discs carry raised geometric patterns in contrasting glass, targets, stars and mandalas, and the mood the maker names is 1960s and optical. Very little else on Caspen looks like it.
The glass does the work when it is lit. Integrated 12W LEDs sit behind the discs, so the colour reads as saturated, stained-glass light, and the raised pattern stands out in relief. Blueberry runs through deep and pale blue with white. Strawberry is red, orange and a warm neutral. Sweetmint is all greens, into teal.
It needs a plain wall or a column to stand against, and at 55cm wide and 40cm deep it takes no more floor than a side table. The maker photographs it in a dark, concrete-toned room, where it works as a piece of art rather than as a reading light. It will not light a room alone, and it is not meant to. The 10-light version uses double discs and weighs 35kg, against 20kg for the 5-light. Lollipop wall lights in the same glass can extend the composition along a wall, which is how the maker shows them.
Multiforme is a manufactory of art glass lighting based at Trebaseleghe, in the Veneto.
