Goblin Floor Lamp

A glass column 195cm tall, finished with a tulip-shaped cup where another floor lamp would have a shade. The maker builds it from transparent blown glass and gold leaf: a spiral-ribbed dome and glass petals at the foot, then a long stem broken by spiked balls and stacked collars, with a ribbed cup at the top that holds the lamp. A narrow gold line runs up the centre of the whole length.

Clear glass and gold on a polished gold frame is the version photographed, and it keeps the column very light against a wall. White, clear and gold is more solid. Pagliesco, Noce, Moka and Smoke give the stem real colour, and plain clear removes the gold. The metal can also be polished nickel, which would suit Smoke or clear glass in a cooler room.

With a 2.4m ceiling, 45cm is left above the cup. The one E27 lamp sits above eye level and shines through ribbed glass, so this is not a lamp to read by, and a room will need other light as well. Use it for its height: a pair either side of a fireplace or a doorway, or one in the corner of a hall or a hotel lounge, where a slim upright can hold a space that a table lamp would not. It measures Ø40cm across.
