Cosmopolitan Ceiling Light

Cosmopolitan hangs strips of plate glass in concentric rows beneath a deep, plain metal band. The strips vary in length, so the lower edge is uneven, and the band above is left unbroken to hold it in check. Multiforme calls the material crystal plate glass, and its rippled surface catches the lamps strip by strip. The idea comes on a round frame in four sizes or a square one in two.

Clear shows the texture of each strip and lets the lamps read as bright points within it. Frosted takes away the glare and looks white by day. The frame decides how the fitting sits on the ceiling: brushed gold reads as a bright ring around the glass, burnished brass is the darker metal, and lacquered black reads as an outline.

The maker describes it as suited to spacious rooms with low ceilings, and the dimensions agree. Every size is 35cm deep, so under a 2.4m ceiling 2.05m remains: fine over a table or seating, and 5cm short of the 2.1m walk-under clearance, which a 2.45m ceiling restores. The Ø130cm carries twelve lamps for a long room, and the maker's photograph lines up two of them down a sitting room. The Ø85cm and the 75cm square have ten lamps each and suit a dining or sitting room of ordinary size. The Ø60cm and 55cm square, with six and five, suit a bedroom or a small dining room. These are heavy for their depth, at 95kg for the Ø130cm and 70kg for the Ø85cm, so settle the fixing before the size.

Multiforme is a manufactory of art glass lighting based at Trebaseleghe, in the Veneto.
