Chimera Chandelier

Chimera is built from one part, repeated: a curved strip of glass, which the maker calls a listel, fixed to the frame by a single screw at its centre. The strips overlap tier on tier like shingles, leaving a broken edge all round, and the screw heads show as rows of small metal studs. Close to, each strip has a surface of small bubbles and a raised block pattern, so it reads as a worked material and not as clean sheet glass.

The catalogue gives two colour mixes and one plain glass. Storm Sky is the light grey in most of these photographs. It looks stony with the lamps off, and in the maker's room photograph it turns a warm honey colour once lit. Sun Dance runs through cream and amber. Clear Frosted is the quietest of the three. The frame, in polished gold or polished nickel, is seen only in the studs and the ceiling plate.

The 14-light is Ø80cm and 110cm tall, tapering to the base, with a drop of 130 to 180cm. To walk beneath it with 2.1m clear needs a ceiling of 3.4m. Over a round table of 120 to 140cm, hanging 75cm above the top, it works from 2.8m. The 23-light is Ø80cm and 160cm tall, swelling at the middle, and drops 200 to 280cm, so it needs 4.1m to walk beneath: a stair void or a double-height hall. These are heavy pieces, at 65kg and 95kg, so have the ceiling fixing checked before ordering.
