Charleston Column

Hung in enough tiers, the Charleston strip stops behaving like a ceiling light and becomes a column. Plate glass strips drop from a single round or square plate, one tier inside the next, narrowing towards the foot. The maker builds the Ø70 x 140cm as a spiral, so the tiers wind downwards instead of stepping evenly. From beneath, the strips open out around the lamps like the scales of a cone.

Silk white Seta is the quietest: smooth strips with rounded tips that read as one pale column when lit. Copper and Gold carry a metallic fleck and warm considerably with the lamps on. Ambra is a grainy amber. Silver and Clear keep a rippled surface and suit a cooler scheme. Frames come in brushed gold, brushed copper or brushed nickel.

Head height decides the size, because all eight hang directly from the ceiling with no separate drop. To walk beneath at 2.1m, the Ø40 x 125cm and the square 50 x 125cm need a ceiling of 3.35m, the Ø70 x 140cm needs 3.5m and the Ø80 x 150cm needs 3.6m, which puts them in stairwells and double-height halls. In a 2.4m room, the Ø40 x 80cm stops at 1.6m, 85cm above a dining table. The Ø30 x 30cm leaves exactly 2.1m, so it can serve a corridor. The Ø40 x 50cm and Ø60 x 55cm leave 1.9m and 1.85m, for a table or a bedroom. Weight varies widely: the Ø80 x 150cm is 110kg against 35kg for the spiral, so have the structure checked for the largest.
