Leo De Carlo's Cage is a birdcage of curved, twisted glass rods holding butterflies that are shaped by hand by the maker's glassmakers. Each butterfly sits on a fine wire in the middle of the cage, and with the LEDs on, the rods carry the light down their length. Here the cage stands on a polished black nickel base, Ø50cm and 65cm high, with the same 30W LEDs in the caps above and below.
The rods come in five colours: Pagliesco, a pale straw, Ametista, Olive, Cornflower and Sapphire. The butterflies are shown in clear glass with coloured edges. The maker's photographs show Cornflower, where the rods go blue-white at the top and bottom, near the LEDs, and deepen in the middle.
At 50cm across and 15kg it needs a substantial surface, such as a centre table, a broad console or a sideboard, with space on all sides. It is too large for a bedside table. Keep the wall behind it dark or plain, since the butterflies are the detail and they get lost against pattern.
Multiforme is a manufactory of art glass lighting based at Trebaseleghe, in the Veneto.
