Cage Floor Lamp

Leo De Carlo's Cage is a birdcage of curved, twisted glass rods holding butterflies that are shaped by hand by the maker's glassmakers. Each butterfly sits on a fine wire in the middle of the cage, and with the LEDs on, the rods carry the light down their length. The floor lamp lifts the cage to head height on a slim black nickel tripod, for a total height of 185cm.

The rods come in five colours: Pagliesco, a pale straw, Ametista, Olive, Cornflower and Sapphire. The butterflies are shown in clear glass with coloured edges. The maker photographs the floor lamp in Pagliesco against dark panelling, and that is the combination to copy: the rods turn pale gold and the clear butterflies read clearly against the dark behind them.

It takes up about 50 by 60cm of floor and weighs 20kg. Stand it in a corner of a dark room, at the end of a hall, or either side of a large painting in a pair. Because the butterflies sit at eye level, this is the version to choose if the glasswork is the reason for buying. The two 30W LEDs are integrated.
