Caesar Flambeau

A flambeau stands on furniture, and this one has the arms, cups and plumes of a Caesar chandelier gathered onto a column. Five lamps sit in scalloped cups, on arms that curl outward from the centre, with feathered leaves and rosettes standing between them. Below, the column widens into a dome of moulded glass with a ruffled collar, resting on a round base with a metal rim.

It is photographed in gold glass, streaked with gold through every rib and leaf, on a polished gold base. In clear with acacia trim or clear and gold it reads lighter, and the column stays more transparent. Clear, gold and polychrome adds paste flowers in pink and aquamarine. Frosted glass gives the same outline a matt surface. The base rim can be finished in gold or nickel, polished or brushed, to suit the furniture beneath it.

It measures Ø55cm and stands 80cm high. On a sideboard 90cm high, the top reaches 1.7m and the cups sit close to eye level, which is where this much detail wants to be. The arms need room: on a console shallower than 55cm they will reach past the front edge. A pair suits a sideboard of about 180cm or more, or either end of a long hotel reception desk. It weighs 12kg, so choose a solid top, not a glass shelf.
