Moiré

Moiré is named after the watered silk whose rippling sheen comes from one woven pattern lying over another. Christian Lava builds the same effect in metal. Fine grids of plated rods are layered in curving petals, and as you move, the lines slide across each other and set up shifting interference patterns, so the pendant seems to change shape as you walk past it.

The form is somewhere between a flower and a flame, 65cm across and 65cm high, with an LED module at its heart that lights the grids from inside and throws fine lines of light and shadow onto the ceiling and the table below. Walk around it and the pattern resolves differently from each angle, and in gold plate the whole piece glows like woven metal.

In the room. Moiré is sized for a dining table, where it reads as a single sculptural object at eye level as you sit. It works over a round or square table for four to six, in an entrance hall where it is seen as you arrive, or in a bedroom or library with good ceiling height. The overall height adjusts on site from 90 to 190cm. Hung with its lower edge about 75cm above a table top, that suits ceilings from about 2.4 to 3.4 metres. Gold plate warms the light and sits with walnut, stone and warm whites; nickel reads cooler and suits grey, black and chrome schemes. Lava also designed Stream and Etoile for Terzani, and Moiré shares their interest in letting the material shape the light.
