Scintilla Cluster

Scintilla is a fall of spiked glass elements, each about 10cm across, hung on fine cables from a round ceiling plate. The shape comes from rostrato, a technique the maker credits to Ercole Barovier in the early 20th century. Multiforme pulls the tips as far as the viscosity of the glass allows, so each hand-crafted element becomes a rosette of long points with a small lamp in its hollow centre. The maker's own phrase for it is a crystallised spark.

Most of the photographs show Clear, where the points take their colour from whatever sits behind them. Under a polished gold plate they pick up yellow. Under Delabrè bronze they read cooler and darker. Smoke and Gold are the other two glasses, and brushed gold and brushed nickel complete the frame choices. The plate is the one broad surface in the piece, so choose its finish with the ceiling in mind.

All three sizes are slender for their light count, and all need height. The 9-light is Ø40cm with a drop of 180 to 200cm, slim enough for a narrow stairwell. The 25-light is Ø60cm and drops 150 to 170cm. The 37-light is Ø90cm, drops 180 to 200cm and wants a double-height hall. To walk beneath with 2.1m clear, allow a ceiling of at least 3.6m for the 25-light and 3.9m for the other two. Over a dining table, hanging 75cm above the top, the 25-light works from a 3m ceiling and the others from 3.3m. Each drop adjusts by only 20cm, so measure the ceiling before choosing.
