Ikebana Pendant

Ikebana is by Romani Saccani Architetti Associati, and the reference is the Japanese art of arranging flowers. Each element is a long stem of blown glass, sleeved over braided metal, that bends at the end into a wide chalice with a wavy, irregular rim. The lamp sits inside the chalice, in plain view, and the rim catches the light.

The stems are grouped in what the maker calls ever-changing arrangements, so the larger versions read as a bunch of flowers hanging upside down. The frame sets the temperature: brushed gold or burnished brass with Pagliesco glass, a pale straw, is warm and close to candlelight. Rose with brushed copper is unusual and works in a darker room. Clear with brushed nickel is the quietest.

The 15-light, at Ø90cm and 300cm tall, is made for a stairwell or a double-height hall, which is how the catalogue shows it, in an arched room above a staircase. It weighs 45kg. The 16-light is a 160cm linear group for a long table, and the 5-light a 130cm linear for a smaller one. The 9-light at Ø60cm and the 3-light at Ø30cm work over a round table or a console. The single stem, at 100 to 120cm drop, suits a run of pendants over a kitchen island.

Multiforme is a manufactory of art glass lighting based at Trebaseleghe, in the Veneto.
