Hydiscus Ceiling Light

Hydiscus is a scatter of blown glass discs, hung on fine cables at different heights beneath a flat metal plate. The discs are irregular in shape and shallow like dishes, and they sit at random angles, so some face the room while others show only a thin edge. Clear crystal pendants run down through them and break up the composition vertically. The polished plate reflects the discs hanging beneath it.

The chart lists Rosso Murano, Citron, Noce, Gold and Clear. The 150cm shown here is the red version, with deep red discs mixed among clear, brown and satin white. The catalogue's installation over a buffet counter, including red and citron, is on a far larger plate than the sizes listed, and a plate of that scale goes through the studio. The plate comes in polished nickel or polished gold.

Over a table, the 150 x 45cm, with 14 lamps, suits a length of about 200 to 240cm: under a 2.4m ceiling, at its full 80cm drop, it stops at 1.6m, 85cm above the table top. The 110 x 45cm has a shorter drop of 40 to 60cm, which leaves the discs at least 105cm above a table in the same room, and it suits a length of about 150 to 180cm. The Ø60cm, with six lamps, belongs over a round table of about 90 to 110cm. The tall Ø90cm has 18 lamps and a drop of 190 to 210cm, so it needs a ceiling of at least 4m to give 2.1m beneath it, in a stairwell or double-height hall.
