Galactic Pendant

Galactic is a ring of glass tubes held by a single band of brushed gold. The tubes pass behind the band at different heights, standing above and below it, so the outline is uneven while the metal draws one clean line through the middle. Underneath, a mirrored gold diffuser closes the circle and shows as a bright disc from below.

The tubes are blown art glass with gold leaf, worked in the technique the maker calls rigadin ritorto: fine twisted ribs that run round each tube and read as a zigzag where one wall of glass is seen through another. Gold glass with the brushed gold band is the version photographed. Clear glass is the plainer choice, and the frame also comes in brushed nickel.

The body is only 25cm deep, so it takes little height from a room. Over a table, with 75cm of air above a 75cm top, a 2.4m ceiling calls for 90cm of drop, within the range of 60 to 110cm. The Ø60cm with six lights suits a round table of about 100 to 120cm, the Ø75cm with nine lights a table of about 120 to 140cm, and the Ø95cm with 12 lights a table of about 150 to 180cm. To walk beneath it at the shortest drop you need a 2.7m ceiling. The maker shows the Ø75cm in a study, in front of a wall of shelves. Weight climbs quickly, at 12kg, 24kg and 36kg, so check the fixing on the larger two.
