Caesar Chandelier

Caesar is Multiforme's version of the Ca' Rezzonico style, in blown art glass, and it runs from a 6-light at Ø70cm to a 21-light at Ø200cm in three tiers. Long ribbed arms leave the centre and curl back on themselves. Above them stand plumes and leaves with toothed edges, while bell-shaped pendants hang below each scalloped cup. The maker's room photographs show the three-tier form, hung as a pair down a frescoed dining room.

The glass sets the temperature. Clear with acacia trim is the lightest, with colour only at the edges. Clear and gold threads gold through the ribs. Gold glass, which the maker describes as entirely streaked with gold, warms every part, and frosted glass takes the shine off. Clear, gold and polychrome is the most decorated, with paste flowers and pink and aquamarine details on the cups and pendants. The 21-light is photographed here in plain clear, also on the maker's chart.

Only the Ø70cm fits a 2.4m ceiling: its 90cm minimum drop leaves it 75cm above a table. The three mid sizes, at Ø95 to Ø100cm, start at 115 or 120cm of drop, so over a round table of about 150cm or a table for eight they need 2.65 to 2.7m. The 12-light, Ø120cm and 135cm tall, needs 3m over a table and 3.6m to walk beneath. The 21-light, with a drop of 215 to 315cm, needs 4.25m to walk beneath, and belongs in a stair hall or a double-height room. It weighs 75kg, so the fixing point should be checked before ordering.

Multiforme is a manufactory of art glass lighting based at Trebaseleghe, in the Veneto.
