Hallway and Landing

Pendants, chandeliers and wall lights for the first room anyone sees.

The hall is lit for arrival and for passing through, so it is the one room where a light is mostly seen in movement and from below. It sets the register for the rest of the house in a few seconds.

A tall entrance hall can take a chandelier or a long-drop pendant centred on the door or the stair; leave at least 2.1m of clear headroom beneath it. Narrow halls and corridors suit flush and semi-flush fittings or a run of wall lights, which light the walls and make the space read wider. For stairwells and double-height halls, see The Stairwell.
