Dalì 4036/S1 Pendant

Dalì takes its name from the painter and its form from his melting watches. Several layers of thermoformed glass, each softened by heat and allowed to slump, overlap into a single rounded tongue of glass that hangs from a slim iron grey arc. The glass is flecked with fine bubbles, and because the layers do not quite align, the edge shows each one as a separate line.

Dalì was designed by Nava + Arosio Studio, the partnership of Luca Maria Arosio and Paolo Emanuele Nava, who graduated from NABA in Milan in 2014 and work from a house, studio and workshop of the early 1900s in Lissone, outside Milan. The S1 is the single pendant: 61cm wide, 60cm tall and only 4cm deep, so it reads almost as a drawing in glass from the side.

Hung singly it suits a bedside, a reading corner or a small table, where the glass can be seen face on. In a row of three or four over a long dining table, mixing glass colours as Italamp does in its own photographs, it becomes a frieze. The drop adjusts from 10 to 100cm, so the glass hangs 70 to 160cm below the ceiling; with the lower edge about 75cm above a table, that suits ceilings of roughly 2.2 to 3.1m. An 11W LED module gives 1,100 lumens at a colour rendering over 90, so the light is a glow through coloured glass rather than task light. Dimming is not included; DALI or Casambi is available on request. For a larger table, the 120cm Dalì Grande takes centre stage in the dining area of O. House in Bodrum.

Light blue is the cooler and more transparent of the two colours here; amethyst is warmer and denser. Italamp also makes the S1 in grey and light green.

Made in Italy by Italamp, which has made lighting since 1975 and is based at Cadoneghe, near Padua.
