Clip 4050/AP60 Wall Light

Clip holds a single sheet of thermoformed glass between two slender metal rods, as if the glass had been clipped in place. The sheet has a soft, irregular pebble outline and a rippled surface; the two rods run straight past its top and bottom edges, slightly offset. At 60cm wide and 82cm tall, the AP60 is the larger of the two wall versions.

Clip is by Pio and Tito Toso, brothers born in Venice who trained as architects at IUAV and have run their own studio since 1996; their lighting has been made by Artemide, Foscarini, Venini and Vistosi, and MoMA in New York has selected some of their projects. Italamp describes Clip as a meeting of glass and metal that gives a soft, enveloping glow. When it is lit, the glass glows in its colour, dark amber, grey or amethyst, and light washes the wall above and below the rods.

In the room, the AP60 is only 9cm deep, so it clears a corridor or a stair, and at 82cm tall a single one can hold a landing, the wall above a console or the end of a hallway on its own. Mount it with the centre of the glass at about eye level. Italamp shows the AP60 hung above the smaller AP45 as a pair of different sizes, which suits a tall wall. The integrated 13W module gives 920 lumens at a colour rendering over 90: an ambient wall light rather than a reading light. Choose shiny champagne with dark amber or grey glass for a warmer or a quieter wall, or shiny bronze with amethyst for the strongest colour.

Made in Italy by Italamp, which has designed and made lighting since 1975 from its base at Cadoneghe, near Padua.
