Clip 4050/S45 Pendant

The Clip pendant hangs a single sheet of thermoformed glass between two slender metal rods on a pair of fine cables. The glass has a soft, irregular pebble outline and a rippled surface, and the rods run past its top and bottom edges as if clipping it in place. At 46cm wide and 64cm tall, this is the smaller of the two pendant sizes, and seen in the round it reads as a piece of coloured glass floating in the air.

Clip is by Pio and Tito Toso, brothers born in Venice who trained as architects at IUAV and have run their own studio since 1996; their lighting has been made by Artemide, Foscarini, Venini and Vistosi, and MoMA in New York has selected some of their projects. Italamp makes Clip in three combinations: shiny bronze with amethyst glass, and shiny champagne with dark amber or with grey. Lit, the glass glows in its own colour and the rods read as fine lines of metal against it.

In the room, the S45 is only 9cm deep, which makes it useful where a round pendant would crowd the space: beside a bed in place of a lamp, as Italamp shows it, over a narrow console, or in a stairwell. Over a kitchen island, two or three at staggered drops work well, mixing colours if the scheme allows. The drop adjusts from 10 to 100cm on electrical cable. The integrated 14W module gives 1,100 lumens at a colour rendering over 90, a soft decorative light. The larger S60 pendant and two wall versions share the same glass.

Made in Italy by Italamp, which has designed and made lighting since 1975 from its base at Cadoneghe, near Padua.
