Volver is a fall of brass chain held in a band of light. Ribbons of fine chain, each made of many strands laid side by side, loop over a plated frame and drop in long, uneven lengths, so the piece has the weight and movement of heavy drapery, or of water caught as it spills over a ledge.
It was designed for Terzani by Diego Bassetti and architect Andrea Panzeri of Studio 14, protégés of the Italian designer Bruno Rainaldi, and it was the first LED suspension light Terzani made. Replaceable LED modules hidden in the frame shine down through the chains, so every link catches the light and the strands shimmer as air moves through the room. The output is serious, with a colour rendering index of 90: the large linear carries twenty modules and more than 13,000 lumens, enough to be the main light in a dining room.
Four forms, three linear and one round, in nickel, black nickel, brushed bronze or gold, at 3000K or 2700K.
In the room
The linear forms are made for tables. As a guide, the small, at 70cm, suits a table for four to six or a kitchen island; the medium, at 132cm, a table of around 2.2 to 2.6 metres; and the large, at 183cm, a long table of three metres or more, a boardroom or a hotel lobby. All three are 30cm deep, so they stay slender in plan over the table. The round, Ø80cm, belongs over a round table, in an entrance hall or at the centre of a stairwell, where it can be seen from below and from the landing.
The body is 78cm deep and the overall height is set on site between 95 and 198cm, so Volver is happiest in rooms with some height: a generous dining room, a double-height hall, a hotel lobby. Nickel is the brightest and most liquid; black nickel turns the chains into dark, glinting texture; brushed bronze and gold warm the light as it passes through.
Hand-crafted by local artisans for Terzani, a house born in Florence.
