Oscar

Oscar is Dodo Arslan's tribute to Oscar Niemeyer, the Brazilian architect who said that what attracted him was 'the free, sensual curve'. A satin white glass globe, 20cm across, rests in a cradle of curved metal that rises from the table in two thin, folded blades, like a sheet of brass bent once and left to hold the light. Nothing is added beyond that.

The glass is satin-finished, so the lamp inside is never seen. Lit, the globe glows evenly from within, soft enough to look at directly, and the metal catches its light at the curve so the base reads as a fine line of colour beneath the sphere. In satin brass or gold plate it is warm and jewel-like; rose gold gives a blush of pink; nickel is cool and precise; and black or white let the globe float.

In the room. At 23cm high, Oscar is a lamp for close quarters: a bedside, the end of a sofa, a console in a hall, a desk or a deep bookshelf. It is at its best in pairs, either side of a bed or a mantelpiece, where the two globes set up a quiet symmetry. The dimmer sits on the cable, so it can turn down to a low evening glow, and the fabric cable, white or black with the black finish, is neat enough to leave on show across a console. Arslan also designed Terzani's Iceberg chandelier and Stanley floor lamp, and Oscar is their small, intimate counterpart.
