Harpe

Harpe begins with a memory. As a boy, Christian Lava watched a grey, leaden sky break open and sunlight fall through the gap in straight, bright rays, like the strings of a harp. His pendant for Terzani draws that moment in metal: a flat, leaf-like outline, just 8mm deep, strung from top to bottom with fine vertical strings of metal.

A single LED sits in the small block at the crown and sends its light down the length of the strings, so each one carries a thread of brightness and the whole outline glows from within. Switched off, the pendants read as line drawings hung in the air. Seen side on, they all but disappear.

There are three shapes, at 29, 48 and 69cm tall. Terzani assembles them into graduated clusters and long linear arrangements, from a single pendant to ten, in matte pearl, matte black nickel or matte gold, each with its own fabric cord.

In the room

Harpe gives atmospheric light. Each pendant gives around 237 lumens, enough to glow and to pool softly on the surface below, so over a kitchen island or a desk, pair it with discreet task lighting. A single small or medium Harpe works beside a bed or in a quiet corner; three singles in a row make a light, graphic line over an island.

The two and three light clusters hang at staggered heights and suit a console, a reading chair or a stairwell window, where the layering reads well from below. For dining, the five and eight light round arrangements sit over a round or square table, and the seven and ten light linear arrangements follow a long table or island, their mixed heights giving the run a rhythm that a row of identical pendants never has. Because each pendant is so slim, even the ten light arrangement keeps the room open: you see across and through it. In a double-height space, Terzani can extend cable lengths and design a larger bespoke cluster.
