Pulsa Spira 439/SP20 Chandelier

Pulsa Spira hangs Danilo De Rossi's long, curved shades of blown glass on a spiral. Each shade drops on its own fine cable from a ring of fixings at the ceiling, at a slightly different height from the last, so together they turn once through a metre of air. Italamp describes the form as the twirling of a maple seed as it falls.

De Rossi has practised as an architect and designer in Venice since the 1980s, works closely with glass, and has been Italamp's art director since 2016. Pulsa is his modern reading of the classic glassworks: shades of artistic blown glass, fluted and curved, here in shaded white on an iron grey structure. The LED sources sit among the shades and the light comes out through the glass, so the fluting draws it into fine lines while the spiral throws shadow onto the ceiling and walls around it.

In the room, this is a piece for height. It is 150cm across and 100cm tall, and the drop adjusts from 10 to 100cm, so the whole composition occupies between 110cm and 200cm below the ceiling. The natural home is a stairwell, where the spiral reads differently from every landing, or a double-height hall. Over a large round table it needs a ceiling of 3.2m or more to keep 75cm clear above the tabletop. The integrated 36W module gives 3,700 lumens at a colour rendering over 90, which is sculptural light rather than working light: in a stair hall, treat Spira as the centrepiece and light the treads separately.

Made in Italy by Italamp, which has designed and made lighting since 1975 from its base at Cadoneghe, near Padua.
