Piola 687/200 Pendant

Piola is a lit screen two metres wide. Bars of cast glass, each holding a fine mist of micro-bubbles, are fixed at staggered intervals to slender vertical rods that hang from a horizontal top rail, and LEDs light the glass so every bar glows along its length. Italamp calls it a velarium, the word for the awning stretched over a Roman theatre.

Danilo De Rossi, the Venetian architect who has been Italamp's art director since 2016, started from the idea of a luminous diaphragm: a veil with an architectural presence. That is how it behaves. Piola divides a space without closing it, and the light it gives is the glow of the glass itself, held in the bubbles of each bar. The structure is chrome and light gold, and each bar is held to its rod by a small clear block, so the metal reads as lines and the glass as points.

In the room, Piola is 200cm wide, only 5cm deep and 215cm tall, and the cable sets the drop between 30 and 100cm. Under a 2.7m ceiling at the shortest drop, the lowest bar sits about 25cm off the floor, so it reads as a lit partition between a living and a dining area, across the end of a long room, or in a stairwell where it is seen from both sides. The integrated 14W module gives 1,700 lumens at a colour rendering over 90: atmosphere rather than task light, so pair it with downlights where people read or cook. At 67kg it needs a ceiling fixing your installer has checked; the canopy is a rail 45.5cm long and 5cm wide. Italamp also lists Piola at 130cm and 280cm wide.
